Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Deane Retirement Strategies different from other financial advisors?
We specialize in retirement planning and investment management under one roof, combining the expertise of a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). We manage investments in-house, never using mutual funds, annuities, or insurance products. As a fee-only fiduciary, we act solely in your best interest and maintain full transparency in everything we do. Our clients also value that when they call, they speak to someone who knows them personally—never a call center.
Are you a fee-only fiduciary financial advisor?
Yes. We are fee-only fiduciaries, meaning we are paid only by our clients and never by commissions or product sales. This structure eliminates conflicts of interest and ensures our advice is always aligned with your goals.
How do you get paid and what are your fees?
Our fees are simple and transparent. Annual costs begin at 1.25% of assets under management and decline to less than 1% as portfolios grow. This covers all of our services, including financial planning, investment management, and ongoing meetings. You will always know exactly what you are paying us to the penny.
Do you work with clients outside of New Orleans?
Yes. While we are based in New Orleans, we work with clients across the country. Meetings can be held in person or virtually, and our systems allow for secure communication and document sharing no matter where you are.
What is your minimum portfolio size to become a client?
Our new-client minimum is $1 million in investable assets. This ensures we can provide the high level of service and personalized attention that each client deserves.
Will you work with my CPA or estate attorney?
Absolutely. We frequently collaborate with our clients’ CPAs and estate attorneys to coordinate tax planning, beneficiary strategies, and other financial decisions.
Why don’t you invest using mutual funds?
We avoid mutual funds due to their higher internal expenses, lack of transparency, and potential for unnecessary overlap. Instead, we use individual stocks and carefully selected ETFs for greater control and cost efficiency.
Who will we be meeting with?
You will work directly with Keith Deane, our Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Keith has over 20 years of experience guiding clients through all aspects of retirement planning and investment management. He takes the time to understand your unique situation, answer your questions, and develop a plan tailored to your goals.
Do you have validated reserved parking?
Yes. We maintain two reserved parking spaces for our clients and guests on the ground floor of our office building’s annex garage.
Where will my assets be held?
All client assets are held at Charles Schwab, our independent custodian. Schwab safeguards your accounts, facilitates all trading, and provides 24/7 online access so you can view your holdings, balances, and activity at any time. Additionally, securities in your accounts are protected by SIPC insurance for up to $150 million for custody-related issues.
What if a major hurricane hits New Orleans or there is another pandemic?
Our office is prepared and equipped to continue operations from any location while maintaining the highest levels of security and confidentiality. In the event of a hurricane, pandemic, or other disruption, we have systems in place to respond to evacuation needs quickly and efficiently. You will always be able to reach us, access your accounts, and receive your retirement income without interruption.
